Divine Grace in the Life of Sigfredo Carrión
Sigfredo will never forget what happened in 1979 when divine grace came to his life to take possession of a boy who was barely eleven years old.
He was born on the first of December in 1966 en Cuenca, the third largest city of the republic of Ecuador. Cuenca is a beautiful colonial city with four rivers running through it. Its spring-like weather makes it a paradise all year long.
Sigfredo was the first of four children. Sigfredo’s home was nearly so favorable as Cuenca’s climate. The family wasn’t rich, but, as a middle class family, they had sufficient economically. However, the home life was a disaster, as his parents talked of separation. His father lived a sinful life, engaging in all sorts of vices. In a word, the man was vile, unloving, ambitious, and sensual.
God, in His mercy, called his father from this life of sin, He forgave him, saved him, and transformed him along with his wife. The change that came over Gonzalo and Esperanza Carrión greatly impressed young Sigfredo.
When missionary Dale Simpson came to the Carrión home to take Gonzalo to his first Evangelical Christian meeting, young Sigfredo opened the door to him. Once in the home, Dale didn’t waste time while he waited for Gonzalo to finish getting ready to go. Instead, he turned to Sigfredo and took advantage of the time by evangelizing this young boy.
The wonderful result of this witness was that Sigfredo opened the doors of his heart to the love of God. That day Sigfredo and his father went to the first Evangelical meeting of their lives together!
It wasn’t long before the little baby church began to meet in the Carrión home. Gonzalo was thrilled to see that the group was growing day by day. However, Sigfredo was tempted by the world, the flesh, and his ungodly friends. He lived a double live: when he was with his friends he followed their lead, but in Sunday School, he was the best student.
He was very good at faking, but he didn’t have his mom fooled! She had known from his birth and she knew he wasn’t as he appeared when he was in the congregation. When Sigfredo finished his junior year with terrible grades, his mom took him aside and had a talk with him.
What most affected the young man was this word, “In the same way I suffered with your father when he didn’t know the Lord, I am suffering with you now.” Sigfredo knew how she had suffered, because he had suffered by her side those long years of marriage martyrdom until his father was converted.
The beautiful thing about this dialogue with his mother was that Sigfredo rededicated his life to the Lord. En 1991, after a year of studies under the teaching of Dale and Janis Simpson and their son, Mark, Sigfredo the leadership laid hands on him, setting him apart for pastoral ministry.
The Evangelical church Amor y Paz (Love and Peace) prospers under the oversight of Gonzalo Carrión with Sigfredo serving as senior pastor.
Sigfredo married Bertha Patiño and they now have three children. Debora, Sharon, and Sigfredo Jr., not pictured.
This beautiful testimony is proof of what can happen when Divine grace is manifested in a life. |
